Kindergarten

Kindergarten at Cambridge is designed to foster the development of the whole child in a creative, loving, and enjoyable environment. This first, formal educational experience is designed to enhance each child’s God-given joy of discovery and learning. Phonics, reading, and math readiness activities are introduced using developmentally-appropriate manipulatives and activities. Cognitive and verbal skills are developed through storytelling, seminar discussions, show-and-tell, and poetry.

Our three-day kindergarten program is scheduled Monday and Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., and Wednesday from 8:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. This schedule allows kindergartners to participate in most all-school activities, including chapel and field trips. The schedule also makes it easier for families with children in other grades to arrange carpooling options.

Depending on enrollment variables each year, we may also offer an additional Tuesday/Thursday option to support families seeking a full-time situation.  Without detracting from the existing three day program, these additional days would specifically:  1.)  reflect a home environment(the space and flow of the day to be less structured, have fewer limitations, and provide increased opportunities for exploring, discovering, creating and freely initiating); 2.)  offer individualized attention (through a lower child to adult ratio); and 3) focus on play (vs. academics).

First Grade

The first grade units focus on students’ understanding of themselves and their relationships within their families, community, city and nation

Phonics instruction is a vital component of our reading and spelling instruction in first grade. Units emphasize a hands-on, multisensory, instructional approach in which the primary goal is to nurture each student’s imagination, creativity, and social skills, while laying a strong reading and math foundation..

Second Grade

The second grade units focus on the exploration of the major geographic regions of the world. Students discover the many ways that land forms, flora, fauna, and people interact to create unique cultures.

Phonics instruction continues into the second grade as foundational elements to the reading and spelling instruction. Math instruction comes from the Everyday Math Program, a spiral curriculum which allows students to explore various concepts while building strong foundations.
