The primary goal of language instruction at Cambridge School is to develop in all students the capacity to engage in and understand the world around them. Spanish instruction begins in the first grade and continues through the eighth grade. Spanish instruction provides exposure to a contemporary second language and culture. Younger students naturally absorb and enjoy the language while older students focus on grammar skills and vocabulary development. The acquisition of this particular language equips students to engage Spanish speakers in local communities and elsewhere including in Mexico during the 8th grade service trip. Offering instruction of a contemporary second language also acknowledges God’s care for other cultures, places, and people in His world.
A foundation in Classical languages is considered beneficial to the fundamental understanding of English, the Romance languages, and the history and writings of Western civilization. During the younger years, when children naturally love to learn and memorize with ease, Latin root words and phrases are learned and connections to unit studies are explored. As reasoning and expressive abilities mature, instruction progresses to grammar and vocabulary expansion.
